Tracking&Analytics
PDF is still the most common format for business documents sent externally. Most tools track PDFs with fragile pixel tricks (stripped by Gmail) or heavy DRM (breaks the reader experience). Afterquoted renders your PDF natively in the browser and tracks the session around it, not inside it.
PDFs are the hardest format to track. And the most common.
You send PDFs every day. Proposals, contracts, case studies, pitch decks, onboarding guides. And yet the default tools pretend PDFs do not exist. Email tracking stops at the subject line. DocuSign tracks the signature. What about the 12 pages in between?
Email tracking pixels fail on PDFs
A tracking pixel fires when the email is opened, not when the attached PDF is opened. Prospect archives the email, opens the PDF two days later offline. Your tracker thinks it is cold. It just moved to their downloads folder.
Heavy DRM tools add friction
Some enterprise PDF trackers require the recipient to install a viewer, create an account, or accept a consent banner. Conversion drops steeply with each friction step. Your proposal dies before it opens.
"Opened" is not enough
Binary opens are 2015 tech. In 2026 you need page-level time, scroll depth, re-opens, forwards, and stakeholder split. PDF tracking should tell you which slide made the CFO pause, not just that the CFO opened the file.
Four different things get called
"PDF tracking."
Search "PDF tracking" and you get a messy mix of sales analytics, marketing content metrics, enterprise DRM, and raw GA4 download counters. Four different problems with the same keyword. Pick the one that matches your use case.
Track proposals and decks sent to prospects with page-level engagement and forward detection. Best for sales and revenue teams.
Track whitepapers and ebooks embedded on websites to measure content engagement. Best for content marketing teams.
Control who can open, copy, print, or screenshot a PDF. Strong security, heavier reader friction. Best for confidential legal or regulated docs.
Count downloads from a webpage via Google Analytics 4's File Downloads event. No insight into what happens inside the PDF. Best for basic attribution.
Native rendering beats
embedded pixel tricks.
The standard way to track a PDF is to embed a tracking pixel or a phone-home script inside the file. It is fragile. Gmail strips it, corporate filters flag it, offline readers bypass it entirely. Plus the recipient often sees a security warning about embedded content, which kills trust.
Afterquoted does it differently. We do not modify your PDF. We host it behind a branded tracked link, render it in the browser using native PDF rendering, and capture engagement at the session level, not inside the document. The PDF itself stays clean: no watermark, no script, no alteration. What we track is the session around it.
Page-level time is measured by which page is currently visible and scrolled within. Forwards are detected when a new email address opens the same link. Re-opens are counted as separate sessions with their own heatmap. All of this without touching the original file.
