Document
Tracking
Document tracking shows you what happens to every file you send externally: who opened it, which pages they read, how long they spent, and whether they forwarded it. This page explains the category in plain English, disambiguates it from adjacent tools, and shows where Afterquoted fits.
You send documents all day. You know what happens to almost none.
Proposals, contracts, investor decks, onboarding PDFs. Each represents revenue, risk, or reputation. Each disappears into a black hole the moment you hit send. PandaDoc benchmarks show 84% of sent proposals do get viewed (Consensus case), but most sales teams have no way to know which of theirs fall in that 84% and which never open.
Every send is a shot in the dark
Did legal actually open the MSA? Did the prospect get past page 8 of the proposal? Did the new hire read the onboarding PDF? Without tracking, every external document is a shrug, answered only on the next call (if you ever get one).
You do not know who actually reads what
The prospect says "I shared it with my team." You cannot verify. Was the CFO looped in? Did procurement see pricing? You find out the hard way, typically when the deal stalls or lands with a competitor.
Follow-ups become awkward guesswork
You circle back after five days, hoping the timing is right. Meanwhile the champion moved on, the momentum died, and the decision-maker is now asking a competitor the same questions you could have answered on day one.
Three different things get called
"document tracking."
Google's top 10 for this keyword mixes postal-mail tracking, enterprise compliance audit trails, and sales engagement analytics. Three categories, one term. Find your intent below, then read the rest of the page.
You need to know where a physical document is in transit (courier, certified mail, inter-office delivery). This is shipping, not engagement. Examples: doc-tracking.com, registered mail services.
You need a legal audit trail of internal document edits, versions, and signatures. Required in regulated industries. Examples: Adobe Acrobat Sign, DocuSign, enterprise DMS platforms.
You need to know who reads documents you send externally (prospects, clients, investors), which pages they engage with, and when to follow up. Examples: Afterquoted, DocSend, Papermark, HubSpot.
Document tracking is a digital process that monitors how a recipient interacts with a document you send externally. It captures the moment of open, time spent per page, scroll depth, re-opens, and forwards to new stakeholders. In sales contexts, this data is used to time follow-ups and identify buying signals. Modern tools add AI coaching on top, surfacing patterns across a corpus of documents to recommend what to change next.

Where document tracking
hits its limits.
Document tracking is powerful, but it has blind spots. Knowing them up front is what separates a careful seller from a creepy one.
Offline reads are invisible
If the prospect downloads the PDF and reads it offline, we log the download event and lose the page-level engagement. Expect 20 to 30% of senior-exec reads to happen offline, especially on mobile.
Stealth buyers use burner emails
Procurement teams and enterprise legal often open tracked links from role-based inboxes (procurement@, legal@) that obscure the individual reader. The signal exists, the identity is hazier than on individual accounts.
Alert fatigue defeats the tool
Reacting to every ping, including 3-second skims, makes you annoying and trains the team to mute notifications. Set alert thresholds (first open, revisit, forward) and ignore the noise in between.
Tracking does not fix a bad proposal
If your proposal template does not convert, tracking tells you faster but it does not make it better. Pair tracking with AI coaching, or with a rigorous iteration process, or both.
